The Conspiracy of Us (sampler) - Review

Another sampler!

Can you imagine a book sample sale? Is that a thing? It would be pandemonium. People fighting over ARCs, beloved pages flying, fingers turned into claws, screeching, Just give me the book and you'll keep your teeth!

Internet means this doesn't happen. You can all read the sampler of Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall at the end of the post. Everyone's a winner!

To fight her destiny as the missing heir to a powerful and dangerous secret society, sixteen-year-old Avery West must solve an ancient puzzle in a deadly race across Europe. Forbidden love and code-breaking, masked balls and explosions, destiny and dark secrets collide in this romantic thriller, in the vein of a YA DaVinci Code.

Avery West's newfound family can shut down Prada at the Champs-Elysees when they want to shop in peace, and can just as easily order a bombing when they want to start a war.

They are part of a powerful and dangerous secret society called the Circle of Twelve, and Avery is their missing heir. If they discover who she is, some of them will want to use her as a pawn. Some will want her dead.

To thwart their plans, Avery must follow a trail of clues from the landmarks of Paris to the back alleys of Istanbul and through a web of ancient legends and lies. And unless she can stay one step ahead of beautiful, volatile Stellan, who knows she’s more than she seems, and can decide whether to trust mysterious, magnetic Jack, she may be doomed after all.

The main characters, Avery and Jack, seem to almost have a Bella/Edward relationship dynamic, at least from what I've read so far: Like Bella, Avery is the new girl in town and school who isn't very close to people and isn't trying to be; Jack is also new, but like Edward he's adored by the masses of teenagers in his school, but doesn't really talk much with them, never of his own will, he's very enigmatic, good-looking, and has some kind of fascination or unclear interest in Avery.

The events definitely aren't like Twilight, though. There's already some mystery about everything, some hidden identities are popping up as well. Four chapters in, the book has a good pace - I don't feel like I'm missing information I should have to understand the events, but things are making marked and significant progress.

I haven't read the description, so I've no idea what this book is about, or where it's going, but I'm looking forward to finding out.

The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall releases January 13, 2015! (Yay, early date!)
